I saw it explained during a formula 1 race, and they demonstrated it with a car with the skin removed, so you could see the driver's feet (car standing still). They described its use at the end of a long straightaway, car going 170 mph, going into a turn which required about 40 mph. Braking is delayed until the last moment, of course, and the driver downshifted sequentially through the gears upon reaching the speed which the next lower gear will tolerate without exceeding the engine's redline. They showed it with the guy's feet, then showed the race going on, with cars going into that turn they talked about, and you could hear the downshifting - very quick from each gear to the next. When demonstrated, it looked like the ball of the driver's right foot great toe was on the brake, and the ball of the pinkie toe was blipping the throttle. Throttle and clutch went in and came out together. After that, I started doing that on my downshifts, reasoning that I would save the clutch some wear.
