I too purchased one of those cheap spring compressors, I think it was Harbor Freight, but not sure.

My brother used it and missed the same fate as a friend (working on a Lotus, I believe) whose reconstructive surgery was extensive.

The point here is that cast (-iron or -pot metal) parts can be VERY hard to detect cracks until its too late. Please be really careful with those inexpensive compressors, be set for them to let go at any time.

Sorry, not tryin' to be the Safety Police, but I've got direct anecdotal evidence of a serious problem.
