How Would You Know If Your Cabin Air Temp Sensor Stopped Working?

The cabin air temp. sensor ('94) is a little MOTOR driving a little FAN that sucks in cabin air and blows it over a temp. sensor, right?
If so, what would be the symptom(s) of a bad cabin air temp sensor FAN MOTOR? Would it be something as obvious as the A/C or heater not turning on or off when it's supposed to, such that you either freeze to death or get cooked? Or would it be something more subtle and harder to detect? Maybe something so subtle that it really doesn't matter if you have a nonworking fan motor?

Context: I've had a noisy/buzzing sensor for awhile now, and I'm wondering...if I try some trick like blasting it with compressed air and/or squirting electronic cleaner (1,1,1,trichloroethane or trichloroethylene) or newborn pig's urine or whatever, and if the sound went away, well, how would I know whether I fixed it or whether I actually made the problem worse by permanently destroying the little fan.
