The leakage problem with synthetics is a real one. Synthetic oils have lower surface tension than conventional oils. Because of that, they will leak in places that conventional oils will never leak. And when summer comes along and you see your main seal, crank seal, etc. start to leak, you will want to switch back to conventional oil.
What do you hope to accomplish with synthetic oil, anyway? If you have an older car, chances are the engine will already have most of the wear it will see its lifetime. Synthetics provide better cold start protection, but what does it matter after you have cold started with conventional oil several thousand times already? If you are trying to extend oil changes, that is not a good idea either. Synthetics hold up better than conventional in terms of viscosity, but they become saturated with dirt, carbon, etc. way before viscosity breakdown takes place. Mobil 1 and the rest of the manufacturers do NOT recommend longer intervals between oil changes.
What you are buying yourself at this point with synthetic oil is a bunch of headaches and a lot of oil stains. Stick with high quality conventional oils unless your car is new or nearly new.
