cooling fan running on

I am experiencing a problem on my 87 9K since the Thermostat in the cooling system went south and blew out a heater hose. I did a repair to the hose (I patched half of a new hose to the existing one) and everything seemed to be fine- until the battery was dead in the morning on several days. As I paid closer attention to the details, the cooling fan was coming on as soon as the engine powered-up, and kept running after the car was shut-down. It ran for 10 or 15 minutes, and then a buzzing sound would begin behind the fuse panel which would last for about 15 seconds. When the buzzing stopped, the fan would shut off. I've discovered I can avoid the dead battery if I unplug the fan's fuse after shutting down the engine; however, if I turn the ignition switch past the Accessory position, the fan starts and the whole process repeats itself.
I've checked the coolant temp switch on the radiator, and it seems to be working properly. All the wiring diagrams I can find only show a connection from the battery to the temp switch then the fan and back to ground. There must be more to this circuit to be causing the problem, and the sound behind the dash. Can anyone provide better wiring diagrams or other insight?
