I'd definitely check out ball joints (I'm puzzled about why the problem would come and go if its ball joints) but also suggest possible oddball brake issues. A few years ago my wife had a similar problem with her car (not a Saab) after a recent brake service, including adjusting the parking brake. Everything was fine until she had driven a few miles and then it would start shaking like there was no tomorrow, especially on the highway. After sitting at the roadside for a while the problem would go away, then reappear, etc. Turns out the handbrake adjustment was a little too tight. As things warmed up the clearances disappeared and the parking brake pads were binding. All it took was backing off a notch or two on the adjuster. I also had similar symptoms once with a sticking caliper piston. It didn't stick all the time but when it did the car shook like hell and pulled to one side.
