This scanner - reader is a common OBDII type that primarily reads the government required emmision codes. It will not read other ECU's on the vehicle or many of the proprietary engine codes. Read the copy of the EPA papaer on the Xray site for a better idea of what this type scanner does.
I have a $150 obd-2 (http://www.obd-2) converter that interfaces between the OBD port and a PC. It will read, display, graph engine parameters, clear codes, etc. Would you like to print out of your boost pressure and engine RPM through the gears, it will do it. A used laptop with Win 3.1 along with the converter costs less than the Xray scanner. Checking and clearing codes has not been an issue, it's worth it to read and graph engine parameters.
I think it is a crime that the vehicle ECU's can not be accessed without a Tech II. All ECU info should be readily avaliable at least after the warranty. Having to run to a dealer to set the alarm system is asinine. 99% of the leasees don't care, eventually all the cars are owned by someone who gets hit in the pocket for reading and clearing codes. Many people avoid the hassle and cost by ignoring the warning lights, is that good?
