How to save 60 bucks.

Last weekend during a high speed run up to Creedmoor NC in my '88 9KT the idler pully for the ac compressor seized so badly that the bearing welded itself to the race and fried the belt. This pulley is evidently proprietary to Saab and a replacement from the dealer is about $70. This got me to thinking about what our options are going to be for repair parts when OEM parts are no longer available. The pully unit contains a sealed bearing which is held in place by a rivited coverplate on the side of the pully.
I decided to try to fix the pully by drilling out the rivits and removing and replacing the bearing. To make a long story short, the bearing turned out to be a standard bearing available from NAPA for about $8. Tax and the cost of a few rivits brought the cost to about 10 bucks and a $60 savings.
Plus I now know how to fix this type of pully if a replacement is no longer available from SAAB.
