Hi Gavin, sounds like you're looking forward to coming to Australia, hey? :)

I can tell you exactly what's involved in shipping a Saab to Australia and who to talk to about it, for you to determine the feasiblity of the exercise. Before I throw loads of info at you, I'd seriously suggest you just sell your car in the UK and buy another one out here, then sell that one when you go back to the UK. Unless your car is extremely rare or has particular sentimental value, it's going to get expensive and troublesome.

Firstly, Saab 9000 values have NOT been holding up too well - the transition to GST has seen values drop dramatically from last year to this, particularly in the newer models. Your '92 9000 is probably worth about $10,000 (4,000 Pounds?) out here. Saying that, they're higher than UK...

To ship one car from the UK to Australia is going to cost in the region of 1400 Pounds in a single container - you can pack the car with stuff if you want. The shipper will drain your oil & petrol, steam clean & fumigate it (you'll need, and get, a Fumigation Certificate which Aussie Customs demand - they can order you to re-export or scrap the car without it) and strap it all down nice and tight. Insurance could cost you a few hundred quid...

The troublesome part is coming up now. You'll need Federal Office of Road Safety Approval from Canberra, costs $50 to apply. If the car is over a certain age [I think it's 15 years, I'll need to check] approval is automatic. Superficialy similar cars actually might not be approved and you may have to carry out some annoying modifications to register it in some States too...
Import Duty/GST will be about 30% of the LOCAL value... could cost you $3,500.
If you're taking the car out of the UK for 3 years or more you'll need a Certificate of Permanent Export from DVLA and when you bring it back it'll be treated as a new import and you could be taxed at standard rates of import duty.

OK you ask, how do I know..? I emigrated from UK in '97 and I shipped an old '73 Saab 99 with our house contents...
And I'm in the process of shipping another old one as we speak/write... :)
Mine were/are easier due to age ie. automatic import approval, cheap import duty, and the fact we're over here some time, so the costs will be amortised over a long time...

If you REALLY want to do this, I can help you out with name of a shipper (likely the best quote you'll get) and the address of the Aussie Federal Office of Road Safety and a few other things.

Don't bother with the LPG, the boot space you'll lose won't be worth it!

Hope this helps
John
