_Maybe_ at the bottom end of the RPMs, a V8 will have an advantage but the intelligent Saab turbo driver will carefully pick his/her "battles". I used to have a '69 AMC Javelin SST with a 290 V8 (200Hp & NO smog equipment at all). That car couldn't possible hold a candle to my '87 9kT with 221k miles and 160Hp. The more I come up against "muscle cars" and bitty little Japanese cars with 4" stove pipes stuck up their backsides, the more I appreciate my 9kT. Actually, there's a bit of sadistic fun to be had when some "kid" wants to challenge a big ol' black 4 door sedan, but that's another story. Drive _intelligently_ first & foremost...the "fun" will come.
There's also a MAJOR advantage enjoyed by Saabernauts over any "muscle car". Unless you live in Death Valley, you have rain and snow to deal with. If you've never ridden in a rear wheel drive car with chains on, count your blessings!! (Okay, doing "donuts" in the snow is a whole lot easier.) We could talk about gas mileage of even the fastest, most modified Saab versus the mildest "muscle car"...err, aside from Mr. Elkund's 750Hp 9-3. Reminds me...where were the "performance cars" when this 4-banger was out doing what comes naturally? Oh yeah, way down there in the times, assuming they didn't blow up along the Pike's Peak course. "Displacement" lost that race and it was Mr. Elklund's first time!
We could also talk about longevity. Will that '95 Firebird rack up the same number of miles as a '95 Saab? I'm not aware of any '87 V8s with over 221k miles that still rock. We could talk about insurance rates too. Certainly, Saabs must enjoy lower rates, turbo'd or not.
Last but not least...How many so-called "performance car" companies make jet fighters? ;)
BE CAREFUL out there! We'd rather hear about your victories than read your obituary!!
