(Warning - after reading my post, I determined that I've had too much coffee today! This is slighty long)
Like may people, we have had a small fleet of cars over the years.
From Japan:
78 Honda Civic CVCC - Bad valve seats, car smoked at 30K. Car started rusting at 2yrs. (Fun little car, with 12" wheels.)
88 Honda Accord LXI - Front brakes would warp at any hard/panic stop(we would turn the rotors every 6 months or so, I think we had 4 new sets on the front over 187K); We replaced three electic motors for the windows; the air conditioner was replaced multiple times, with multiple components over the years, for a total of over $6K; radiator at 87K; water pump at 101K; and several other items over the years. I was told that the cars that were built in the first 1/2 of 88, had had some "improvements" in the brakes and air conditioning area (lower component cost to Honda) - they changed these after the second 1/2 of 88. The frustrating part for me, was that Honda would not make good on any of these problems of bad "improvements".
95 Honda Accord EX - Yes we bought another used one, as a gift to our daughter when she graduates from college this year. I talked with several owners, and the 94-96 VTECH Accords - have a good reputation on reliability. Edmunds has the safety at just a few tenths of a point below the 96 SAAB 900S we were looking at - so I went with the Honda.
_____
Our VW's, Volvo's and Saab have been a joy to own over the years.
The 84 Jetta GLI - had zero problems over 8 years and 125K (wish we had kept it for our daughter - we put her in the 88 Accord LXI for High School years).
Our 92 Passat GL - was also a painless experience up until the end. Last year it was hit from behind and salvaged. The car was slighty under powered, but we could carry 4 people on trips very comfortably. The car would get over 30MPG on these long road trips.
Our 90 740GL Volvo - Is off at school at UCSB with our daughter. Running strong, and ready to go another 100K (at 120K now). She thinks it looks like a box (has anyone else ever said that!!), so I could not talk her into keeping it after college. (We had the deal of: Out in four years, we will buy you a car of under $15K - we will still save over $7K from saving on the payments of the more normal "5yr+ college plan").
---
Does Scott limit the size of responses? You get the idea. Most of our other VW's, and a few American trucks, have all done very well for us. I do take good care of the cars. But we did find our first two Honda's to be the most expensive and unreliable cars we've ever owned - with a very unresponsive Honda company.
The key is safety, fun, function/reliabilty when looking at the ownership of cars.
Best of luck to all!
Regards,
9-5 Smitty
