Ok, I thought my 460 watts was quite sufficient. Though, I do notice wind noise can really start to drown out the stereo if I am traveling at over 120 mph with all the windows and sunroof open....

You must be a competitor in dB drag contests, eh? :) Our company has a series of those about once a month from spring to late summer. So far I am pretty weak, but then most everyone is using a compact import, whereas the 9000 is a large car..

As for the Class D using less power, that's only slightly true. While they can be more efficient than a Class A (very inefficient) or Class AB (most common), 1200 watts is still 1200 watts. No amp is over 100% efficient, and few are very close to it. So while your 1200 watt Class D may only be drawing current which equates to say (this is just a guess), 1300 watts input, a class AB amp maybe would draw 1400 watts on the input. Either way, power out has to be smaller than power in. And 1200 watts is 100 amps!

If your 1200 watts is continuous, and you actually were to exploit that full output potential for very long (hard to do with most music, but not impossible), your alternator would be damaged in short order if it were only an 80A unit, as you'd be sourcing power from the battery. I'm guessing you have the 115A alternator, or your amps aren't putting out anywhere near 1200 watts continuously. Or, you simply only do that for very short periods at a time - as in a few seconds.

Now, the battery has no problem putting out 100 amps at a time, but it'll be dead in very short order if you keep that up..
