yeah, sounds to me like another casualty of synthetic oil (spun bearing) in an older engine. Do i sound confident, well, it just happened to me as well. I am in the process of rebuilding the enging on my 90 9000 turbo. I can assure you that the rod bearings could be done with the engine in place, however, you will have to raise the engine as one of the lower motor mounts is cast into the oil pan, great engineering, not really. Anyway, the rod bearings should also be replaced however you need to pull the engine to do this. My advice, if you are in love with your car as I am then rebuild although i am capable DIY, but if not you can get used engines at the SAAB depot in ontario canada for between 500 and 700 canadian or make a post about rebuilding info and i could email you back the goods.
