I've had experience with a couple Volvos, not much joy in either. I bought one new back in the dark ages ('69); it was the most expensive car I ever had--in relative terms. Valve jobs at 30K do not go down well with me, and that was just the beginning. A Swedish car that experienced carburetor icing? Doorlocks that froze when the car was washed during the cold season? Somewhere around 45K, I swapped it for a slope-back V4 Saab, and never regretted doing so.

More recently, my wife decided that her 1994 Saab 900 (145K, owned from new) no longer suited her needs in carting business materials around, so purchased a '91 Volvo 740 Turbo Wagon (ditto miles, local original owner). By the time she sold it (having gotten herself a 9-5 wagon in May, 2000), she had owned it about 18 months/9K miles, put about $3K into repairs, rplaced battery and tires, had it towed in a couple of times for "relay" problems, experienced some frustration with minor mechanicals not working anymore, gotten very tired of body trim parts falling off. Was it a good hauler? It had the ability to swallow almost as much as my 91 9kT. It used a LOT of gas, was not responsive in either power or handling, and generally was rather doltish. It was handsome, although I flinch admitting so.

Today we did a run from LA back to the Monterey Peninsula in the 9-5 wagon. It was quiet, secure, 24mpg (automatic), 80 to 85 most of the way. If you really want a wagon, you may want to look at the 9-5.
