doing what Joe9Saab posted. I had my 86 9kt in south Texas for four years, even towed a 2500# boat on weekends with it -- the engine is made to run hot and some radiator calcification will lower it's efficiency, as will the same effect inside the engine.
Replacing the radiator is fine -- the only thing I'll add besides Joe's suggestions is to consider using Red Line Water Wetter. It breaks down surface tension and allows more heat transfer. It will lower temps, especially when combined with a higher ratio of water to coolant.
Besides the previous items suggested by Joe (cooler therm, cooler rad fan switch, good flushing), I also switched my 86 and 87 9kts over to the Texaco extended life coolant. The MB stuff has similar properties, just more expensive. I still change it every two years, but that's probably overkill.
PS sold the 86 at 121k mi two years ago; current owner uses it as a daily driver in VA; the 87 has 155k on it w/ stock radiator.
