A joke, of course, but the chain is pretty dang reliable on the early models. I have a '88 with a 119k. Aaron Gilbert has a '87 with over 250K. Both with stock timing chains. They're reliable past 200K IMHO. The 2.3L 9000 is a little more finiky when it comes to timing chains and I hear they are replaced more often. I would consider checking your timing chain tensioner, making sure it's not worn out. If it's okay I wouldn't worry about it as the timing chain is not problamatic on early model 9kts. It's as close to bomb proof as I have seem. Over 200K, that could be abother story. But Aaron's living proof of the long life, and he's running performance mods to boot.
