The usual sign is a squeal at startup. Not just any squeal, but a cat with a megaphone stuck in a blender. We're talking wake up the neighbors squeal, or at least it has been in my experience. The squeal stops within 10 -15 seconds. Or at least that's as bad as I'd let it go before I replace the pulley.

As a test, take a piece of chalk and draw it across the pulley parts. Then start the car when cold and hear the squeal. Then see if the chalk lines still line up.

I would estimate about two hours to replace the pulley. That's not mechanic's hours, but my hours - finding all the tools, futzing with a stuck bolt, searching the basement for my other 13 mm socket, that sort of thing. Then putting everything away and washing up. It's not a big job. The only time the job gets bigger is if you decide to replace the main seal while you're at it. It's not that replacing the seal is that big, but if you're in there, you might as well replace the O-ring on the oil pump. And with the inner liner off, you start looking around, and.... The last time I went in to replace a main pulley, I ended up replacing the seal and O-ring, alternator brushes, and both lower engine mounts.

With a car your age, I'd buy a new main seal and oil-pump O-ring just in case. They're cheap, and if you see signs of oil leakage, you're already in there and have the parts. And of course, replace the belts if they're getting old - they have to come off anyway. And give the two idler pulleys (AC belt, serpentine belt) a spin to see if the bearings are OK or sound like gravel.

Buy a new pulley from one of the mail order places that advertise on this BB. I don't have a latest price, but you should be able to find them in the $75-$90 range. The dealer, of course, will charge much more.

See the Townsend site (http://www.townsendimports.com) and check on replacing the main seal for a 900. It's similar for the 9000, except the 9000 is a whole lot easier, because access is better.
