I noticed the same thing on mine and pulled firmly till it came off. The fear of pulling too hard for me at least was that I may have pulled the shaft out. Some one posted awhile back that it was a permanent mount, never needing to be replaced, and to remove it you should break it off. I don't know about that being true or not, but I suppose you could try to carefully cut it off with a hacksaw, stopping before you break through to metal. It should break off quite easy then.
