The temperature maintained inside of the car is not the same (at least in the summer when not on the open road). In my family, there are two late 80s 9KTs - one with R12, one with a new compressor, drier, exp. valve and R134a (we also have two alfa 164s - one with 134 and one with 12). The R12 is noticeably superior, especially in town. They both do okay on the open road, but in town the 134a cars only stay bearable (yes the cooling fans are working correctly). OTOH, 134 seems to do pretty good in old pick-up trucks - I would guess because of the standard large size of the condensor and/or air flow.
