I have had an oil leak on my 89 9KCDT since I switch to synthetic oil last fall. I had bought the car with unknown state of the oil. Since than I get a small patch about 1" in diameter every morning. It was very irritating as I could not determine where it was coming from. Tried cleaning up the engine and watching for a source but the majority was always at the oil drain plug. I assumed it was because it was the lowest point on the engine. Fresh oil was higher up on the engine and steering rack. I was never able to pinpoint the source.

I changed the oil last week and was examining the gasket. The gasket had a kink in it. When I swapped to synthetic I bought a new plug and several brass washers from GAPA. Turns out the washers are too big and the sealing surface on the pan too small. Tightening down the plug caused the top of the washer to bend causing a leak at the top of the plug. The oil leak was small and during driving spread around the backside of the engine. Being late at night I ground down the outside diameter of the washer and heated it back up with a torch to anneal the copper washer. No more leaks.

I figured someone else might find this usefull. At least on my 89 9K the seating surface on the plug is not much bigger than the plug itself. Look for a smaller washer.
