If you bridge the posts on a battery with something conductive, like a wrench, you will get a massive spark, very high heat, and the chance of an explosion and burns. Very bad. OK, so what does that have to do with which post to connect first?

Most of the car is connected to ground. If you hook up the negative lead first, when you go to connect the positive lead, if you slip with the wrench and hit any of the chassis, like the fender, battery box, etc, with your wrench, you'll bridge the battery and all hell will break loose.

If you leave the negative lead off and connect the positive first, if you slip and hit the chassis, no big deal - it isn't connected to the battery. Then when you go to connect the negative lead, if you hit the chassis, again, not big deal - all you have to avoid is the positive post, and you should have put the protective cover back on first.
