Lighter relocation

I've also wondered about relocating the lighter, but haven't bothered because I don't have a compelling reason to hassle with it. But, as you say, the ability to plug in various accessories is appealing, even though my radar detector is hard-wired in already.
Why not install it in the side of the console or under the dash on either side? I would use an inconspicuous location, like under the dash, since drilling a large hole would be required, and someday you might sell the car and wish to return it to its original location. I haven't thought this out, like checking for clearances (legs, etc.), but it's a place to start.
You could also rig up an adapter purchased at a local auto-parts store that simply stays loose somewhere inconspicuous, like sticking out of the console bottom somewhere between the shifter and accelerator pedal. That would be the easiest and least intrusive option, I would think.
