I don't have any comparative data with other 9000s, but in just over a year of Aero ownership (93, 5spd, 114,000 kms) I have been pleasantly surprised by the reliability and low maintenance costs. I bought the car with full service records which show that apart from things that would be common to any 9000 (serpentine belt, engine mounts, exhaust, etc.) in its 8 year life span it has needed a clutch/master cylinder (at 65,000kms - way below average life??), head gasket, DI cassette and a replacement for the throttle body and turbo waste gate. In my tenure it has needed an antenna, a heater core replacement (dealer picked up the cost) and a water pump. I don't know how this compares with other Aeros, but judging from the posts on this BB it would seem that mine has needed more than average attention (other owners care to comment?).
Compared to the alternatives, however, it doesn't seem so bad. I've owned a number of premium/high performance cars over the years including Jags, Volvos and BMWs (my son totalled the last one - a pristine 328is, but that's another story) and so far the Aero is by far the least expensive to run/maintain. Considering the performance and all round capability I think its hard to beat. A friend with a 94 Aero (auto, 160,000kms - his 6th or 7th Saab) also reports low maintenance costs.
