The wear would be in the grooves where the three bearings come in contact. The wear is because of the spin of the shaft. If you turn the shaft while the wheel is a driving level (not hanging down when the car is jacked up) there will be play in the rotation of the shaft in the driver. You should be able to feel the three wear spots in the grooves. The cost of a new one is about $200.
