I've been driving my '88 without and AC belt for a year plus. Same scenario - smoke from under the hood (always good to get the heart racing). I just cut the belt off and went on my way. The compressor appears to be siezed.

You have a variety of options. You have the choice of sticking with the R12 in the system, or changing over to the new R134 refrigerant. Some extra $$ to change over to R134, but R134 is MUCH cheaper to buy, as they don't make R12 anymore. This pays off if you intend on keeping the car a lot longer (many years), because it will pay for itself if you need to recharge the system down the road. However, if your system didn't leak, the R12 can be recovered and reused, saving you that cost. If you're not intending on keeping the car for many years, it's probably best to stick with an R12 system.

You can go to an AC shop and let them do all the work. This will probably cost about $1000 to $1,200, depending on the shop. Maybe you can find one to do it for less. That's because list price on a new compressor runs $400 to $600. And there are other components that will need replacement. This is the higher cost/lowest hassle approach.

Lower cost, more hassle, is to find an AC shop that will allow you to provide the parts. They'll evacuate the system. You can buy aftermarket compressors and components pretty cheaply ($150 - $200 for a compressor), and let them install the parts.

Lowest cost, most hassle still requires a shop - only a licensed shop can handle R12. Have them evacuate the old R12. You buy the parts and instll them yourself. Then have the shop purge the system and re-install your old R12. This requires you to do the owrk yourself, and have the knowledge to do the work, or find the resources to help. You also need to find a shop willing to do less, which means less $$ for them. Many folks on this list have done it.

Of course, I've just rolled the windows down. I'm still mulling over my options and sweating.
