All I said was that it is possible to have an engine fault that the FI system compensates for, and you don't feel any difference. Under those conditions, the Check Engine light is your only notification. That appears to be Ken's problem.
Of course, there are many faults that will not only light the Check Engine light, but also cause the car to run like crap. Not every engine fault can be accomodated with no impact to driveablity. Since the AMM controls 100% of the fuel flow, a car with a bad AMM will drive very poorly.
The impressive thing about the engine control is that with no idea how much air is getting into the engine (bad AMM), the engine still runs and you can drive, albeit lousy.
