Aero Guy and Sjer
many thanks for your comments. One further bit of information. When I started the 180 mile journey the level in the expansion tank was a little above the minimum mark. When the engine warmed through during the first 2 miles the temperature rose to just over the 3/4 level on the temperature gauge and then dropped quickly (5-10 seconds)to about the 1/4 mark before steadying out at the 1/2 level. I the stopped the car to make sure I still had coolant in the expansion tank, which there was.
Thinking about it over the last 6 weeks the temp guage seems to move about a bit more than normal and has been doing the 'warm-up then dip in temperature' routine a few time but on a lesser scale. Mmmmm!
There is no sign of leaking coolant (the car had been parked for the previous 10 days in a carpark). There was a slight weep from the Autobox (which I knew about) but nothing else.
The oil is very clean and there is no smell of oil in the coolant. I am bout to go outside and top the coolant up and have another good look around.
My mechanic is keen to rule out everything else before having to pull the head. I will pass on your thoughts about the thermostat and expansion cap.
