Follow the exhaust pipe down from the intake manifold. The O2 sensor is just a metal cylinder about 1.5 inches long sticking out of the pipe, with a few wires coming off it.

If you have only one wire, then use a digital voltmeter to measure the voltage at that wire. If you have three wires, find the wire with the unique color - the two same-colored wires are the heater.

Splice into the signal wire, and measure voltage to ground using a digital voltmeter. The voltage should swing between 0.2 volts and 0.9 volts, crossing 0.5 about once per second.

But if you have a vacuum leak, or the AMM (Air Mass Meter) is bad or adjusted wrong, or your fuel pressure regulator is shot, the O2 sensor may be pegged to either 0.2 or 0.9 volts, and there's nothing wrong with the O2 sensor - it's just telling the truth.

If you pull a vacuum line off the intake manifold (cause a vacuum leak- lean running), the voltage should drop to about 0.2 volts. If you pull the hose off the fuel pressure regulator and block it (no vacuum leak), you'll casue a rich mixture, and the voltage should go up to about 0.9 volts.

A sensor from the dealer is somewhere over $100 - I've never bought one from the dealer. You can buy a universal Bosch three-wire O2 sensor for about$50. The O2 sensor for a 5.0L Ford Mustang also works. In either case, you'll have to cut the connector off the old sensor and splice the wires from the universal or Ford sensor. But for the $$$ saved, it's worth it.
