Following comments are based on use and sales of synthetic lubricants for over 24 years now, and use in Saabs for that long.
There are still many myths about synthetic oil. You can change from synthetic to non-synthetic and/or semi-synthetic and back again with no problems in any sound engine. All synthetics on the market today are compatible with non-synthetics and, far as I know, with other synthetics.
Synthetics reduce engine wear. Synthetics run with less friction and therefore the oil will run cooler. Synthetics have greatly increased film strength. There is more difference between brands of synthetics than there is between brands of non-synthetics.
You can certainly compound your own blend by mixing and matching oils, but why? The engineers who built the synthetic also did their best to blend a suitable additive package. Depending on the synthetic involved, they probably very carefully cost-engineered the same<g>.
Using heavier than xW-30 synthetic in almost all engines will not give greatly enhanced protection, but will give reduced performance.
Oil doesn't wear out? Well, it darn sure oxidizes and passes off the lights. If you don't think so, cook a cup of oil in the oven overnight at 350 F. Synthetic is much more stable. This is the major reason that oil drain intervals can be extended with a properly formulated synthetic. This has been validated for almost 30 years now, using oil analysis, fleet tests, and actual road use vehicles.
