You can use auto tranny fluid, as Rolf says. I'd take the opportunity to flush your power steering system with the new stuff, just to make sure it's compatible, and because PS systems should be flushed on occasion. But you can just top it off with the same stuff that goes into the autobox.
In the US:
The fuel for non-diesel cars is called gas, short for gasoline
The phase of matter associated with elements like oxygen and nitrogen at room temperature and pressure is called gas, a version of 'gaseous state'.
'Petrol' is short for petroleum, which is pumped from the ground and is a precursor to both gasoline and diesel. It requires a refining process to convert petroleum into gasoline, diesel, or plastics.
So I guess that petrol would be a good term to describe most automotive and truck fuels, most anything made of plastic, some synthetic fibers, most road paving materials, roofing, adhesives, and even a few drugs (asprin was initially derived from tar).
This isn't to make fun of your comment, or of how words are used differently (spanner, boot, take-away, and my favorite - 'smash up'). It's just when it comes to language, don't try and make sense of it. After all, 'fat chance' and a 'thin chance' mean pretty much the same.
