I was asking about the same question 2 years ago. After a lot of lurking,
and reading the 9000 sites, I decided to go for a lo mileage 95 Aero. Yes
it strained the budget, but I got a great vehicle that I plan to run for
many years.
The basic decision point for me was that they had most of the earlier
problems (timing chains, head gaskets, etc) sorted out by this time. Also look at the final drive ratios of the different years; upstate New Yahk does not call for a max top end IMHO (New Mexico is a different story). 1996 gets you a cheaper code reader if you have any thoughts of doing your own work. Obviously, the autos are problematic. I don't know why anybody would want a V-6 with that wonderful 2.3 Turbo. Aeros are cool, CSE's are cool too.
I had a few problems, irritating, but basically minor, at first. The biggest problem was finding a mechanic that really understood the Aero. Just being a Saab dealer mechanic does not qualify you to be an Aero mechanic. And being a decent Indie Saab mechanic does not qualify you either, unfortunately.
That said, I really like my Aero. Safety and Comfort. Fast.
Get a good one, treat it right. Enjoy!
Dave
