between the "service advisor" and the mechanic could vary from one shop to another. At my local dealer, in a not so big city, things are fairly informal and I can just walk into the service bay and start talking with the mechanic. But also, I think I have a reputation for asking numerous and detailed questions of the service advisor, so it's probably just as well with him, if not a relief for him, when he finds me talking directly with the mechanic.

On my last visit, a substitute advisor wrote up the many-itemed order, and he seemed less patient than the usual advisor, especially with my long laundry list of questions and comments and work items, and for one item, I just said, "When the mechanic raises the car up, call me in the waiting room 'cause I want to have a look and I have some things to point out and ask about", and so that's just what he put down on his jobsheet. When the time came, they called me in the waiting room and the usual advisor who had come in by then just waved me through to the service bay and I had my requested conversation with the mechanic.

Of course, every few years when the service advisor changes, I have to re-develop this reputation / relationship with the new advisor.

Now, a big city shop might be more formal (or stuck up) and have tighter controls. In one such dealership that I once unhappily found myself in, I had no idea where the service bay was, couldn't even see it. The car was driven to and from the customer area. It's hard to sneak in to talk to the mechanic when you don't even know where they took your car.

These big city, big operation dealers are the ones where the coffee and donuts in the waiting room tend to cost at least $300.
