Clutch problem also cabin filter question

I have a 1993 9000 Turbo 5spd.
The clutch take up is not very precise sometimes (usually going into first gear and going into reverse.) I usually have to over rev and "feather" the clutch to avoid a "juddery" engagement. Changing gears 2 to 5 is fine and I don't experience any slipping of the clutch. The clutch pedal is very light for the first third of its travel and stiffer for the final two thirds of pedal travel. This doesn't bother me but it may be a symptom of the real problem.
I've researched past posts and from what I gather, it looks like there may be rubber in the hydraulic system or the master cylinder may be failing. But, no mention was made of the light and then stiffer clutch pedal travel. So, hopefully with this added bit of info, I hope to get more precise information from anyone knowledgeable and\or experienced with these symptoms.
My second question is about the cabin filter.
I took a look at mine and it is really filthy. Now I know why my interior always smells a bit dusty. Anyway, I called the SAAB dealer and they want approx. $62 CAD for a new filter....... I immediately started researching past messages again and found a solution. Someone used a home air conditioning filter that was cut out and put in place of the original cabin filter. I'll probably go this route also but is there any type in particular I should look for. ie. minimum dust particle filter size or limits to air flow resistance (as to not strain the blower motor)
Thanks in advance for all responses.
