I recently had this fixed, and watched the A/C guy as he did it and explained what he was doing. I could do it myself now quite easily and keep meaning to dismantle it again and take some photos to add to the list of procedures on my site.

The problem is that after a lot of wear (nearly 150K miles, in the case of my '96 Aero) the air gap between the plates becomes too great for the magnet to pull in, especially at high temperatures when the coil resistance increases. He proved this by showing there was voltage at the clutch, then tapped the end of the clutch with a hammer and it engaged.

The air gap is set with shims under the moving plate. Remove the centre retaining screw (an Allen screw, I think, but I don't know what size - not very big) and remove the plate - careful not to lose the shims that sit around the screw hole, underneath the plate. Remove one or more shims to close the gap. I don't know what the gap should be (can anyone help here?), but I imagine as long as there is enough clearance that the clutch will not drag and that it releases properly, then that is all you need.

I was told my car would probably never need this procedure again.
