When I posted that a while back about not liking the SZ50's, it was mainly because of the fact that they provide little traction when it gets cold and wet and they cost a fortune (almost $900). Wet and warm is much better, and in rain or downpours I wouldn't hydroplane no matter what the speed. In the heat they were excellent on corners. In temps under 50-60 it was all too easy to take a corner a bit hard and have the car go into a four wheel drift, have the back end come around, or get on the gas and have the front end wash out. This was on cool dry pavement. Cool pavement with dew might as well have been a fresh layer of snow.
Like I said before I HAD to drive my Probe GTS on a weekend in the winter when my Subaru 4wd was in my garage for brake work. I couldn't get any traction whatsoever on hardpack/icy roads. I know they aren't designed for snow and cold, but I had to drive it.
I also didn't wear them out in 15k miles, I didn't explain well, but at about 8-9k miles the fronts were about half and that's when I rotated them.
I was younger then and had (have) a heavy right foot. Probe was a 5-spd.
Tires were too easy to spin!!
That was a good part of it.
But when I bought them they cost me $200 dollars each so I thought they were a bad buy for the limitations on traction. I'm in Wisconsin so we only see a few months of consistent 70-80+ degrees days. The balance of the year is rain, snow and cooler nights.
They probably are a great tire for you and warmer weather, but on a lighter car that saw many cold days they just weren't a good combination.
Later,
Shahn
