Yes, it failed - I just buzzed the thing out - the 35K resistor (pin 1 to 2) is burnt out, open circuit, the other two resistors (between pins 2 & 3 and 3 & 4) are both short circuit, 0 ohms. I intend to replace the resistors - I have resistive wire and can do my own winding. The fan fuse is rated at 30 amps - the resistor packs probably aren't (as they seem to be such a common problem) - Does anybody know what power the fan draws, worst case?
Also, there is another component attached across the resistor network from pin 1 to pin 3. - any idea what this is - it appears open circuit in both directions.
