...an auto air conditioner is closer to a small home air conditioner than a refrigerator. The refrigerator will take an hour to cool a well insulated small box to 40 degrees below ambient. We expect a car air conditioner to cool large, poorly insulated tin can from 110 degrees to 70 degrees in 2 minutes. Couple that with a highly irregular shaft speed, all the vibration that people have mentioned, high under hood temperatures, and oil every where, and I'm amazed sometimes that it works at all.

Normally a car air conditioner figures a 5-10 HP loss. A typical home compressor is probably powered by a 1-2 HP electric motor at a relatively constant shaft speed.
