Exact same problem on my '95 CDE, EXCEPT, it was the dealer's new belt (SAAB warranted 90k maint) that broke due to incorrect installation. It smoked and broke within 30 seconds, at highway speed. The engine stopped immediately, and I made no attempt to crank it, since I knew what had happened. This dealer decided that only the heads were involved. It took them 31 days to assemble two new heads (their nickel). The engine is now at 121,000 with no ill effects, so unless there's some unusual damage to piston crowns or rod bearings, you should looking at just rebuilding the heads. The paperwork I saw indicated they were reporting a $6000 bill to headquarters. By the way, I've noticed the negative bias on this BB towards the V6, but I find it to be a smooth, powerful, and reliable engine. It still knocks down a solid 31 mph on the run up I-95 from DC to New York. I've owned four other Saabs with "real" Saab engines, but this is no dog.
