Odd that I should find someone with the same symptoms (almost) as I had today. Mine is a 90 and with 187K on it I , for the first time today had a problem that seem to point in that direction. Engine starts, immediatly starts to stumble and dies. No amount of throttle seems to raise the RPM and if I get any RPM it has no power. I can hear the fuel pumps and the Vacuume lines are all in good condition. The car has sat idle for three days and today I used it for a short run , It ran fine and then an hour later when I tried to use it again it stopped dead in the driveway.. wouldn't even pull itself up the grade. I can smell a rich mixture so I assume the fuel is sufficient, and I heard a long buzzing sound from under the DI cassete cover when it stalled and before I could get in to turn the Ignition off. I took it off, apart and I have no oil leaks or cracks, The rubber covers are all insulator and the coils are up inside the black cover, which I removed to see what was indise, the rest of it's guts are encased in that black liquid filler that they pour on and it hardens around everything. Only a relay, some other box type gizmo and the upper part of what appears to be a condenser is sticking out of the black plastic. The coils are about 35mm in diameter and have just a metal center that contacts a spring in the rubber boot (it compesses between the plug top and the coil end when the unit is secured to the head.)
I am in a quandry as to whether to buy a DI cassette and "see" if it fixes it or to let the Saab guys look at it... either way I'm out at least $400 from what I gather. Meanwhile I am sans wheels. Oh BTW the car had a dead battery after sitting three days and It never did that before.
