--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The ABS system is continuously testing itself. It measures the frequency of the speed pulses coming from each wheel when the brakes are off, and if they disagree, lights the ABS light. It also compares the amplitude of the pulses from each wheel, and if one wheel is out of range with the rest, it lights the ABS light. Any time the ABS light is on, the ABS function is disabled. The regular brakes will work just fine.
There are other, more expensive faults that could cause the ABS light, but they tend to be much more rare. The chances are good that either an ABS sensor is going bad, or has backed out a little, or its cable has a problem. Since the cable is integral to the sensor, it's replaced as an assembly. Another possiblity is that there is some debris in the reluctance wheel ring at the hub.
Bring your car to a dealer and have them read out the ABS codes. It will tell what the problem is, and if a sensor, which wheel. Without that code, you'll just be guessing. At that point a decision can be made as to what needs to be done. But there isn't a lot you can do yourself without that code.
Good luck!
