Heat, mostly. The 9000 system is just like many recent cars - there is no heater valve- the heater core is always hot. Inside temperature is controlled by mixing hot air from the heater core with outside air over the A/C. If you mostly run with A/C, the flap will close off the heater core side, so you won't smell it. Now, with the heater core side closed off, it's pretty much a dead end for air. If there is even a small leakage in the core, it will accumulate, and when you switch on the heat, you'll get a big whiff of coolant that quickly goes away as it evaporates.
So if the heat has been off for a few weeks, and you turn it on and get a big whiff of coolant, don't panic. If the smell goes away after 20 minutes or so, or becomes much less, then the leak is minor and will probably respond to Bars Leaks.
If the core is leaking enough, some of the coolant will lead down through the dash and onto the carpet behind the center console. Actually, it will leak onto the airbag (SRS) control module behind the center console - that's why there was a recall a few years back, to put a little rainhat on the SRS controller. You'll smell that, A/C or heat. My guess is once you've got liquid dripping, replacing the core is the only solution.
