In fact both the rear bearings were exactly the same and came apart from the back of the hub as I pulled it off the stub axle. It just set me thinking when I saw how dried out they both where, if it was just one then fine but both the same sugested a connection. Repacking them was simple - just as you would expect for a non-sealed for life bearing - 15mins max.
I will replace them once I have recovered from the £1000 or so spent last month on a/c, suspension and running gear replacements. In the meantime they seem to be running sweet with some new grease.
