I've owned both. I presently have 2 9000's (down from 3 a year ago).
The 9000 is more comfortable, with MUCH more backseat room, and will hold more stuff. The 900 might be a hair taller, but I'm not sure on that. The big difference in the 9000 is it's wider.
An interesting point- a 9000 of that vintage is about 6 inches shorter than a 900, but has more interior room. That's the joy of the transverse engine layout in the 9000. The turning radius of a 9000 is quite amazing.
A stock 900 will handle with a little more fun than a 9000 - maybe that's just the extra body roll, but the 900 feels a little more tossable. I find the 9000 more stable, and easier to hold steady in a turn. Both are excellent snow car.
The automatic in a old-generation 900 has only three speeds. The 9000 has 4. The three-speed limitation in the 900 is BIG. I would avoid an automatic 900 for that reason - even with a turbo, three speeds is a limitation.
I find the 9000 a little easier to work on. A clutch job on a 900 is much easier than a 9000, but most else is easier on the 9000. The only difference is doing a heater control on a 900 is hard, and the heater core on the 9000 is harder.
The 9000 will have more luxo-goodies, which are fun, but can also break.
I loved my 900's, but I prefer my 9000's. Quieter, more comfortable, and a lot more room inside but smaller outside.
