I'm not so sure you can retrieve codes on a 88 because of the type of system. It seems that only the 2.4x systems have this feature. I may be wrong but in either case, the codes are not that specific as such.
You can easily tell if you have a vac leak though. Let the car idle and find the hoses that are on the intake manifold. using either your hands or a soft jawed pincer, pinch each line that goes to the manifold. There should be two or three. One goes to the fuel pressure regulator and the other ones are to the crankcase vent, if you have a turbo be sure the little check valve is working and installed in the right direction. It should pass air toward the intake manifold but not toward the crankcase.) and the other one is the feed for the vac guage in the dash and to the bypass valve , which in itself could be the one and only leak you have. Does your car stall after punching the gas pedal? or when coming to a stop?.
Of course there are other ways to have vac leaks and some are harder to find and repair. Several places under the dash for MAP and pressure switches Most times it is the bypass valve diaphram, and/or some loose or split hoses at or near connection nipples. Also check the evap canister in the right front fender behind the parking lamp assy. Sometimes a hose can get old, split or blow off. Good luck
