First off, that's way too much money. $4K for a nice one is more like it.

Next, what are the service records? What has been changed, and more importantly, what hasn't? Neglect will kill these cars, like they'll kill any car. Don't go by the color of the oil - oil changes color with temperature, so black oil can be perfectly fine. But if you don't know when the last time the oil was changed, you have to assume it hasn't been changed since the first Clinton administration.

It's important to know if the water pump, heater core, blower motor, motor mounts, or clutch have ever been changed. If they have, good. If not, assume the worst, and soon. If you don't know when the brake fluid or coolant have been flushed, assume the cooling passages and brake lines look like VP Dick Chaney's arteries.

Basically, if there are a complete set of maintenance records showing the car has been well treated in the past 124,500 miles, then $4K isn't out of line. If there are no records, you have to assume the worst. At that, $2K is reasonable. Otherwise, you are open to some major financial risk after you buy the car.

Here's the drift - there are cars out there with good, complete maintenance records. They are worth a few extra $$. No car is a good deal if it's going to blow up in your face. No records, leave the car for the next guy that's taken by good paint and nice seats.
