Ok I'm not Ari, and I'm sure you'll hear from him, but I used to rebuild transmissions 4-speed auto trans in GM products in the 1960s, These things haven't changed that much in that the front seal in an automatic trans- mission is directly behind and in conjunction with the torque converter. So in terms of a complex fix, It has to come out. It can be damaged easily by even a slight "cocking of the torque converter while being installed/and while reinstalling the transmission. You have to know what you're doing in this area.
The governor seals are different and yet worth doing if and while you have it apart. Accumulator springs need to be checked too. I have not done this to mine "Yet" but it's in the near future, as it is beginning to hunt between third and fourth when it needs a downshift (IE a slight upgrade and speeds +/- 45 MPH). Other than that I have, I suspect , 178K on it. I'm not the first owner and I just spent three weeks trying to avoid buying a Brain for the injection system. I had to get one and it fixed the problem. Embarrased and several hundred dollars poorer for being so stubborn, I still love this car and plan to hand on till it can't be dealt with any further.
Good luck
