there's always a but isn't there :) I would concur with Stefan on visiting a good muffler shop before I'd recommend muffler tape, once you use muffler tape forget about trying to go back in and weld on it later. I'd only use the tape on a hoopty car that I didn't give a darn about.

Scuff up the area to be be sealed with a wire brush, wrap it up, then drive the car warm for the proscribed amount of time. Mmmm, now don't THAT smell nice ;) Muffler tape gives off some acrid fumes while curing.
