Open the hood while parked with engine off and have a friend shift the car around it's gears, while you look down with a light between the back of the engine and the firewall, below the windshield. You will see a rod moving back and forth, and twisting. There is a metal-sided rubber block in the middle of the rod, you will see it stretching and moving around, when it should hold solid. Fix is replacement, part is cheap and labor is not too hard, search the board for "shift coupler". Temp fix is to wrap nylon cable ties in an X across the coupler to hold it together.
