r-12 substitutes for air conditioning

I have a '90 9000 with no cold air. The compressor runs if I apply voltage to it, and the system seems to hold some pressure since if I press the valve on the inlet side, it hisses and bubbles at me. I assume the old r-12 has just died a slow death. Recently I've been reading about r-12 substitutes like r-406a and name brands like Autofrost, which claim you can just evacuate the old r-12 and fill-er-up with the new stuff. Apparently it requires no conversion of seals (as long as they aren't the new green or blue ones. They also claim it will blow colder than the original r-12 did. Does anyone have any experience with r-12 substitutes? If true, I stand to save over $1000. vroom!
