After posting that apparently unpopular message earlier about how I couldn't get the car out of neutral, I seemingly "fixed" problem, or more properly my father did. He forced the shifter into first in a fit of frustration, it went; and since then the car shifts fine to all gears.
I took the car for a good spin this afternoon, and had no problems shifting at all.
For a bit of history:
Some time during the summer while driving a clutch fluid hose popped off and the car delivered its first stranding. Within a few days, I found the problem and fixed. The car was driven casually for another month or two and then went in to dormancy for unrelated (human) reasons. When I went to dust the car off and take her for a spin recently, I encountered the problem of the shifter grinding when attempted to put it in any gear except first, and being unable to get it in first at all. The car has occasionally been difficult to get into first in general even before this problem arose.
What the heck was going on? Any ideas?
